WHAT IS HEPATITIS?

Hepatitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the liver and the liver cells. The liver, being a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood and fights infections needs to be protected. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its functions can be affected. Hepatitis is commonly caused by a viral infection, but there are other known causes of hepatitis such as heavy consumption of alcohol, toxins, some medications (too much intake of antibiotics), and certain medical conditions.
Hepatitis causes inflammation and scarring in the liver, making it hard for the liver to function properly.

There are five main types of hepatitis, and they are:

HEPATITIS E

The first three are the most common ones. Hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of liver cirrhosis and cancer.

Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Infection with hepatitis B is usually acute or short-term, but it can become chronic. Hepatitis can be transmitted through body fluids— such as blood, saliva, semen, and vaginal fluids of an infected person. Hepatitis B isn’t spread through casual contact- like handshake and hug.
